2024 Coral Gold Cup Weights Revealed

As the National Hunt season gets underway at Newbury Racecourse on Thursday, the weights for the feature race of the season, the Coral Gold Cup, have been revealed today. The £250,000 premier handicap over 3m2f on Saturday 30th November attracted 37 entries.

Kim Bailey’s Cheltenham Festival winner, Chianti Classico, is current ante-post favourite at 8/1 with sponsors Coral. The seven-year-old made a winning seasonal reappearance in the Grade 3 Sodexo Live! Gold Cup Handicap Chase at Ascot on Saturday and has been allotted a weight of 11st6lb. Stablemate, Trelawne is current joint 10/1 second favourite with an allocated weight of 10st7. The other 10/1 chance in the field is the Henry De Bromhead trained Senior Chief who made a winning return after a break of 208 days at the Cheltenham Showcase Meeting and could be set to carry 11st. Third behind Senior Chief that day was the Nigel Twiston-Davies trained, Broadway Boy. The six-year-old, a three-time winner at Cheltenham, may carry 10st11lb.

The Venetia Williams trained ten-year-old and Betfair Chase winner, Royale Pagaille has been allotted top weight of 12st along with the runner up in the recent Grade 2 bet365 Charlie Hall Chase, Bravemansgame, one of six entered in the race for Paul Nicholls. Nicholls’ 2023 Paddy Power Gold Cup winner, Stage Star, receives the second top weight of 11st11lb.

Runner up in the race last year under just 10st7lb, the John McConnell trained Mahler Mission may return to the Berkshire track later this month and seek to go one better but could be carrying nearly a stone more having been allocated a weight of 11st6lb.

Coral’s David Stevens said: “Although Chianti Classico does have alternative options for his next race, his trainer Kim Bailey hasn’t completely ruled out him running at Newbury, but we have eased him to 8-1 at the head of our betting. The presence of Bravemansgame would add plenty of spice to a race his trainer Paul Nicholls knows all about winning with top weights, and he’s a 16-1 chance.”
