Weatherbys Super Sprint Stars Turned Champion Mares

Weatherbys Super Sprint Stars, Lyric Fantasy and Tiggy Wiggy, were named European Champion Two-Year-Old Mares after their successful seasons.

The two mares both had very successful seasons and were sold for a pretty penny after their racing careers had ended. Read more below!

Lyric Fantasy

Trained by Richard Hannon Snr for Lord Carnarvon, Lyric Fantasy stormed home to win the 1992 Super Sprint by six lengths.

Purchased for just 12,500gns as a yearling, the daughter of Tate Gallery was sent off 2/5 favourite at Newbury having won her three previous starts.

Her victory at Newbury followed Group 3 success in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot, on both occasions guided to victory by jockey Michael Roberts.

The tiny filly, affectionately known as “The Pocket Rocket”, was 8/11 favourite in the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes at York. Under bottom weight of 7st8, she lined up against colts and older horses. She became the first two-year-old since Ennis in the 1956 Nunthorpe to win and the first juvenile filly to do so.

Lyric Fantasy won five of her six career starts as a two-year-old, ending the season with a second place finish in the Cheveley Park Stakes when stepping up to six furlongs for the first time.

She was named European Champion Two-Year-Old before being sold to John Magnier in December 1992 for 340,000 gns.

Tiggy Wiggy

In the eight career starts of her two-year-old campaign, Tiggy Wiggy, the daughter of Kodiac, won six times. Victories included two Listed wins, a six length victory in the 2014 Weatherbys Super Sprint, Group 2 success in the Lowther Stakes and Group 1 success in the Cheveley Park Stakes.

Trained by Richard Hannon Jnr, her victory at Newbury provided the trainer with his first win in the race when ridden by Richard Hughes. She was sent off 5/2 favourite in the 24 strong field and despite carrying top weight, she quickened away from her rivals to win by six lengths.

Tiggy Wiggy ended her two-year-old season as European Champion Two-Year-Old. She raced on at three which included two third place finishes in both the Group 3 Fred Darling Stakes and QIPCO 1,000 Guineas, before being sold for 2,100,000 gns to MV Magnier at the 2015 Tattersalls December Mares sale.
