Newbury Celebrates Grounds Week 2024

It’s 2024 #GroundsWeek, and we’re celebrating the work our Grounds Team do all year round to get our racedays on!

Grounds staff spend countless hours maintaining pitches and keeping them in tip-top shape throughout the year, come rain or shine.

Their day-to-day jobs include mowing, trimming, painting, building chase fences and hurdles, maintaining and repairing the fences, jet-washing the rails, trimming hedges and keeping the racecourse in good shape ahead of every Raceday.

On a raceday, the roles of our ground staff may vary. Some grounds staff will sit in the chase cars which follow the horses around the track, ensuring they can be on-hand to help should a jockey become unseated and need first aid or if a loose horse needs catching or medical attention.

Other members of the grounds team will be filling up water buckets ready for the horses to drink or be cooled down with post-race. Some will also escort horses and jockeys to and from the Parade Ring and Winners Enclosure to make sure they get to their destination safely.

We are very thankful for our Grounds Team who work so hard to keep our track prepared and sport thriving.

Take a look at the video above which showcases some of the jobs our fabulous team do!
