Mrs Danvers – A Super Sprint Cinderella Story

Mrs Danvers was a Weatherbys Super Sprint Cinderella story after the two-year-old filly won the prestigious £250,000 race.

We caught up with Jonathan Portman a few weeks ago who was able to recall the story of his Weatherbys Super Sprint success with Mrs Danvers.

Mrs Danvers went through the last sales ring possible to qualify her for the Weatherbys Super Sprint. She was bought back by Jonathan Portman for £1000, which allotted her with the bottom weight of 8st 2lbs.

Mrs Danvers won all five of her career starts at two years old. She was sold the following year and went to Australia, where she was bred with Galileo.

Described by Portman as ‘a freak’ – and despite being a successful racehorse herself – Mrs Danvers didn’t have a good pedigree and never produced any notable progeny, even though her record and marriages to Galileo should have said otherwise!
