Haynes Hanson & Clark Conditions Stakes Returns for its 46th Running

As Newbury Racecourse’s current longest-running sponsor and the second-longest sponsorship partnership in the venue’s history, Haynes Hanson & Clark has become woven into the fabric of the racecourse. Only the famous Hennessy sponsorship, which lasted 60 years, exceeds its remarkable longevity.

Over the decades, the Haynes Hanson & Clark Conditions Stakes has attracted some of the sport’s biggest names and produced a roll of honour befitting its rich history. Last year’s renewal saw the powerful combination of Charlie Appleby and William Buick claim victory with Look To The Stars, marking their second success in the race this decade.

The list of winning jockeys reads like a who’s who of Flat racing. Legendary figures including Lester Piggott, Steve Cauthen, Willie Carson and Joe Mercer have all tasted success, while modern-day champions Oisin Murphy and Jamie Spencer have also added their names to the race’s distinguished record.

Among the most successful riders in the race’s history are Kevin Darley and Pat Eddery, who share the record with three victories apiece. Richard Hughes holds the unique distinction of winning the race both as a jockey and a trainer, having partnered Wentworth to victory in 2012 before saddling Bracken’s Laugh to success in 2023.

The race has also been a happy hunting ground for some of racing’s most influential owners and trainers. The late Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum recorded six victories in the contest, the most of any owner associated with the race. Marcus Tregoning is the most successful trainer in the race’s history with five victories, while Mark Johnston and John Gosden have each trained four winners of the contest.
