Datsalrightgino Wins Coral Gold Cup At Newbury Racecourse

Jamie Snowden Wins The Coral Gold Cup With Datsalrightgino

The Lambourn-based trainer Jamie Snowden has won the 2023 Coral Gold Cup with Datsalrightgino, ridden by Gavin Sheehan.

The £250,000 Coral Gold Cup was won by Datsalrightgino, trained locally in Lambourn by Jamie Snowden and ridden by Gavin Sheehan for The GD Partnership. The seven-year-old travelled at the rear of the field, only coming into contention three out before pulling clear of the Irish trained Mahler Mission to win by three and three-quarter lengths at odds of 16/1. It was the first time that the Grade 2 winner last season over 2m4½f had stepped up in trip to over 3 miles.  The John McConnell trained Mahler Mission finished a gallant second, six and a half lengths clear of the third placed horse Monbeg Genius for Jonjo O’Neill.

Following yesterday’s trend of winning favourites, the first race of the day was won by the Twiston-Davies team with 8/11 favourite Manimole. Trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies and ridden by son Sam, the six-year-old backed up his victory at Newbury back in November to land the Listed Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle for owner and breeder the Jukes family. The 50-1 shot, Brave Jen, ran a huge race under James Bowen to be beaten just a head into second for Nicky Henderson.

A father-son duo also won the second race of the day with Inch House winning for Jonjo O’Neill and ridden by Jonjo O’Neill Jr. Sent off 6/4 favourite, Inch House was last seen when winning the BetVictor Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase at Newbury’s jumps opener in early November. He landed back-to-back wins at Newbury when winning the Sir Peter O’Sullevan Memorial Handicap Chase beating Lord Baddesley into second by one and a quarter lengths.

The trend of winning favourites continued with Jingko Blue just getting up on the line to deny Masaccio victory in the Novices’ Hurdle, the third race of the day. Sent off 7/4 joint favourite, the four-year-old was having only his second start under rules after a second-place finish at Warwick on his debut having won his sole point-to-point start. He held off a strong challenge from joint favourite Masaccio from the Alan King yard who was looking to back up his win at Chepstow at the end of October.

The Coral Racing Club Handicap Hurdle was won by Get A Tonic for last year’s winning Coral Gold Cup combination of Harry and Dan Skelton. At 28/1 he was an outsider of the field but went on to land a dominant performance and win by seven lengths to 10/1 shot Anyharminasking.

The fifth race of the day, the Coral Intermediate Handicap Chase, registered as The Gerry Fielden, was won by the Gary Moore trained Hansard for the Noel Fehily Racing Syndicate. Ridden by conditional jockey Niall Houlihan, he ran on well to win by three quarters of a length to beat Bad, trained by Ben Pauling, into second.

The last race of the meeting, The Jim Joel Memorial Trophy gave young Freddie Gingell another big Saturday winner when steering the Haldon Gold Cup winner, Elixir De Nutz to victory for trainer Joe Tizzard. Sent off at 9/2, he held off 4/6 favourite Master Chewy to win by one and a half lengths.
