Weatherbys Super Sprint Explained – All You Need To Know

What is the Weatherbys Super Sprint? We spoke to broadcaster Richard Hoiles and Clerk of the Course George Hill who explained all.

Ahead of the Weatherbys Super Sprint, taking place this year on 20th July, we spoke to broadcaster Richard Hoiles and Clerk of the Course George Hill about the concept of the race.

The idea of the Super Sprint was initially thought up by Richard Hannon Sr and Lord Carnarvon, who wanted a race which championed smaller owners and trainers and cheaper horses.

It’s open to two-year-olds only and is run over five furlongs.

The horses who qualify for this race have to have been put through the sales ring and bought for £65,000 or less, with the idea being that cheap horses would have the chance to win big prize money. For every £5000 below the £65,000 maximum price, the horses have a 1lb allowance.

On top of that, fillies have a 5lb penalty allowance, meaning that fillies can run off a weight of 8st.

Mrs Danvers, trained by Jonathan Portman, was a classic example of a cinderella story. Sold in the ring for £1000, Mrs Danvers went on to win £122,000 in prize money after her success in the race.

Take a look at the video for a full explanation of how the race works.
