NAME A FOAL COMPETITION WITH WATERSHIP DOWN STUD

In partnership with Watership Down Stud, sponsors of next Saturday’s Group 3 Watership Down Too Darn Hot Greenham Stakes, Newbury Racecourse has launched a competition to name one of the stud’s most recent arrivals, a regally bred bay filly born on 10 March by legendary sire Frankel, out of the Group winning mare, So Mi Dar.

So Mi Dar herself proved her ability on the racecourse when placing 3rd in the G1 Prix de l’Opera and winning the G3 Musidora stakes in 2016. She hails from the remarkable Watership Down mare, DAR RE MI, who has produced two stallions and four Group performers, including European Champion two-year-old TOO DARN HOT (Dubawi). He stands at Darley’s Dalham Hall Stud and has his first crop of yearlings in 2022.

Frankel was unbeaten throughout his career amassing almost £3M in prizemoney. His record at Newbury began with a win in the Greenham Stakes at the start of this three-year-old career in 2011 and then he followed it up with a win as a four-year-old in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes in 2012.

Watership Down Stud owners, Lord and Lady Lloyd Webber have enjoyed numerous successes over the years and take great pride in the naming of their homebreds, with horses such as Dar Re Mi, Lar Ti Dah, So Mi Dar and Too Darn Hot, all heavily influenced by a musical undertone.  It will be them who decide the winning entry which will be announced on Monday 2 May 2022.

Simon Marsh said: “Born on the 10 March, this bay filly by Frankel out of So Mi Dar looks to be a cracker. It’s always a pleasure to watch them grow and progress here at Watership Down before they start their racing careers.

“Madeleine and Andrew give a lot of thought to the naming process and entries should reflect the Watership Down Stud legacy and high-quality pedigrees. We look forward to going through all the entries.”

To enter, you can follow Newbury Racecourse’s social media channels and dedicated links for further information or visit newburyracecourse.co.uk/name-a-foal-competition directly. There will also be the opportunity to enter the competition at Newbury Racecourse next weekend for the Dubai Duty Free Spring Trials Weekend on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 April, as well as at the Newbury Racecourse exhibition stand at the Lambourn Open Day on Friday 15 April.

To help racegoers with the selection process with your selection which will be announced Monday 2 May, here’s a few hints and tips:

  • Entries must be no longer than 18 characters and keep them clean
  • Names can often be influenced by a combination of both the sire and the dam
  • Given the musical theme that runs through some of the names outlined above, it might be worth considering, but is not mandatory
  • Entries will close on Sunday 24 April at midnight so get your thinking caps on!

The winning prize for the selected name will include:

  • Trip for up to 6 individuals or family to Watership Down Stud for a private tour and meet the foal
