We Caught Up With ALTIOR – The Racehorse With 21 Career Wins – As He Enjoys Retired Life

With 21 career wins, including 10 Grade 1 races and 19 consecutive victories, Altior is one of the most successful racehorses of modern times.

He is the only horse to have won the Game Spirit Chase at Newbury on three occasions in 2017, 2018 and 2020.

Altior retired in 2021 after an incredible career.

His trainer, Nicky Henderson said regarding his retirement, “He goes out unblemished and very nearly unbeaten, and for his retirement he is going to be looked after by Mick and Chloe Fitzgerald and I know they are as happy as we are that he is going to have a long and happy retirement with them just two miles down the road from us.”

In February of 2023, Altior fell very poorly with severe colic. After several operations, and a long road to recovery, Altior’s incredible fight and willpower pulled him through in the months that followed, and he returned to his fantastic self.

A few weeks ago, some of the Newbury team were able to meet Altior at his retirement home in Lambourn with former jockey Mick Fitzgerald and his wife Chloe.

Looking as good as ever, Altior his living his best life. We were able to give him a few treats which he took like a gentleman.

He is turned out freely to roam as he pleases. Chloe Fitzgerald rides him around the village four or five times a week much to the delight of Lambourn locals who all recognise him.

Altior will return to Newbury on Saturday 10 February to parade in front of his home crowd for Super Saturday. We can’t wait to see him again!
