Oliver Sherwood Recounts His Coral Gold Cup Victories With Arctic Call and Many Clouds

Recently retired as a trainer, we visited Oliver Sherwood as he recalled his memories of the Coral Gold Cup (formerly Hennessy). He has previously won an array of prestigious races, including the Challow Hurdle, the Arkle Trophy, the Tingle Creek Chase, and the Grand National.

His first victory in the Coral Gold Cup came in 1990 with Arctic Call who won by around two lengths. After this, Sherwood’s second win in the race didn’t come for another 24 years until owned Many Clouds, owned by the late Trevor Hemmings, won back the prestigious race for him.

Many Clouds was arguably one of the greatest horses of his time, who after winning the Coral Gold Cup, went on to win the Grand National. His winning time in the national was the second fasted in the race’s history, and no horse since Red Rum had carried a higher weight to victory.

The Many Clouds Bar was opened at Newbury Racecourse in 2018 by Oliver himself in honour of this wonderful horse.

Below, you can watch Oliver as he remembers his two incredible wins in this historic race.
