Tuesday 2 May 2022:  Racegoers planning on attending the Al Shaqab Lockinge with Ladies’ Day at Newbury Racecourse on Saturday 14th May can expect a great deal more than just fast horses and fashion as the Berkshire track prepare to welcome the first ‘Lockinge’ crowd back to the racecourse since 2019.

Newbury Racecourse as part of their progressive vision of Ladies Day, will also be championing a first for the industry with the recent launch of their female race commentary initiative which will see aspiring female commentator, Dani Jackson takeover the microphone to commentate on the very first race of the day, a charity race in celebration Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee to raise funds for the Injured Jockeys Fund.

As part of the programme of events, Newbury is assembling a panel of female change makers, all recognised for making waves in their respective sports, to become pioneers of the movement and speak publicly about their journeys in sport as part of the aptly named ‘Panel of Pioneers’.

Speakers will include top flat jockey Hollie Doyle, who has emerged as one of the sport’s biggest talents, alongside Manchester United Captain and England Lioness Katie Zelem who will be looking ahead to the Women’s European Championships in the UK this summer.

Also joining Hollie and Katie on the panel which will take place before racing will be newly crowned Olympic Champion Curler Eve Muirhead, who led her team to Gold in Beijing earlier this year.

The racecourse will become awash with colour, when racegoers get the chance to showcase a vast array of individual ‘signature styles’ with on-the-spot prizes being handed throughout the afternoon by the racecourse style team. Prizes include drink and food vouchers, tickets for future racedays and more.

The star attraction of the afternoon, the Group 1 Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes run over Newbury’s straight mile and worth an impressive £350,000 in prizemoney is the first middle distance race of the season, designed for older horses. Won by some great horses in the past, including the legendary Frankel (2012), Ribchester (2014) and most recently by Palace Pier (2021), the very first running of the race was won by Her Majesty The Queen’s horse, Pall Mall in 1958, who also won back-to-back wins of the race.

In celebration of the upcoming Jubilee, racegoers can expect signature cocktails with the recently launched ‘Jubilee Spritz’ across selected bars, new premier hospitality offerings including the Jubilee Garden Package plus live acoustic music throughout the afternoon and finally an after-party, with dynamic duo and Ibiza legends, Lovely Laura and DJ Ben Santiago who will take to the stage after the last race to get you in the summer mood with some brilliant dance tunes.
