Fourteen set for Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes
There are 14 possible runners in Saturday’s Group 2 Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes, headed by the Richard Hannon duo of Kool Kompany and Baitha Alga, and Henry Candy’s exciting juvenile Limato.
Kool Kompany, already a dual Group 2 winner, will be looking to bounce back having been a beaten favourite on his last two runs. Baitha Alga also needs to put a poor run behind him when last of nine at York last time, but before that had rattled off a hat-trick, including the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Hannon will be looking to land his first win in the race at the first attempt in a contest his father took a joint-record four times.
Candy has some excellent two-year-olds in his stable but perhaps none better than Limato who is unbeaten in three runs, including a smooth Listed win at Newbury in July where he accounted for the high-class Cotai Glory.
The latter’s trainer, Charlie Hills, has left in the highly-regarded Strath Burn and Charlie Appleby has two representatives for Godolphin, Charming Thought and Portamento.
The consistent Jungle Cat, placed on his last four starts – all in Group 2 company – could represent Mark Johnston, while Mubtaghaa, who beat Kool Kompany at York on his last start, could line up for William Haggas. Also potentially representing owner Sheikh Hamdan is Kibaar.
Toocoolforschool from Karl Burke’s yard, the Brian Meehan-trained pair of Fox Trotter and Growl, Mick Channon’s Bossy Guest and Fendale from the Bryan Smart stable make up the possible line-up for the six-furlong contest.
Named in memory of the great racehorse Mill Reef, who was a winner of 12 of his 14 races in the 1970s, the Mill Reef Stakes has been won by subsequent Group 1 winners Excellent Art, Dark Angel, Lord Shanakill and Awzaan in the last ten years. The 2011 victor Caspar Netscher followed up in the Aon Greenham Stakes in 2012 before tasting success in the German 2,000 Guineas.
