Coral Gold Cup: Fourty Nine Entered In Newbury Showpiece

A 49-strong entry has today been revealed for the feature race of Newbury’s Na:onal Hunt calendar, the £250,000 Coral Gold Cup. The premier handicap is the showpiece event of the two-day Coral Gold Cup mee:ng at the Berkshire track taking place on Friday 1st & Saturday 2nd December.

Featured amongst the entries include last year’s runner up Remastered (D. Pipe). Following a tough battle with Le Milos, the David Pipe runner had to settle for second but remains on course to try go one better in the 3m2f steeplechase. Last year’s winner, Le Milos, does not feature amongst the entries but trainer Dan Skelton’s yard is set to be represented by Galia des Liteaux, Midnight River, 2022 Cheltenham Gold Cup third Protektorat, Sail Away and Shan Blue.

Irish Champion trainer, Willie Mullins, has two entered in the race, Bronn and Gaillard Du Mesnil. Bronn, third in the 2023 Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase, was well held by The Real Whacker, the stable star of Yorkshire trainer Patrick Neville, who also holds an entry in this year’s renewal of the Coral Gold Cup. Popular stayer, Kitty’s Light, has been entered by trainer Christian Williams after his heroic effort to win the Coral Scottish Grand National and bet365 Gold Cup in consecutive weeks.

Bri:sh Champion trainer, Paul Nicholls, has three entered, headed by King George VI Chase winner and Cheltenham Gold Cup runner up Bravemansgame. The Ditcheat yard may also be represented by Complete Unknown and Threeunderthrufive.

Corach Rambler, fourth home in the 2022 Coral Gold Cup and subsequent winner of both the Ultima Handicap at the Cheltenham Festival and Randox Grand National, may once again attempt to take home the trophy to Scotland for the first :me in 43 years. The Lucinda Russell yard may also be represented by Ahoy Senor, second behind Shishkin in the Aintree Bowl and runner up to L’Homme Presse (V. Williams) in the 2022 Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase who also holds an entry. The Venetia Williams team have also entered Royale Pagaille and 2021 winner, Cloudy Glen, who could return to try defend the title.

Local trainer Warren Greatrex has entered his Topham winner, Bill Baxter, representing Lambourn alongside Paddy Power Gold Cup winner Ga Law, one of two entrants from Jamie Snowden’s yard who also have Datsalrightgino in the race. Three-time winning trainer Nicky Henderson has three entered, Chantry House, City Chief and Dusart.

Monbeg Genius looks set to be a runner from the Jonjo O’Neill yard, the seven-year-old was due to go off favourite in the Scottish Grand National before a late withdrawal due to drying ground. After making a winning return this season in the Native River Handicap Chase, Stolen Silver is one of two entries for Sam Thomas who rode Denman to victory in the race in 2007. His second entry, Our Power, gave the team a memorable win in the Coral Trophy earlier this year.

Corach Rambler was 4th in the 2022 Coral Gold Cup. He later went on to win the 2023 Grand National.

Clerk of the Course at Newbury Racecourse, George Hill commented: “The Coral Gold Cup is the highlight of our National Hunt calendar here at Newbury. I am delighted to see such a strong field of entries including not only previous winners of the race but multiple Cheltenham Festival winners, a King George VI Chase winner and of course the most recent winner of the Grand National. We are very much looking forward to what is set to be a thrilling renewal based off current entries.”

Coral’s David Stevens commented: “There is a suitably high-class initial entry for this year’s Coral Gold Cup, with the market headed by Monbeg Genius, whose third place finish at the Cheltenham Festival looks even better following a Grand National triumph for the winner, Corach Rambler, and a Punchestown Gold Cup success for the runner-up, Fastorslow.”
