Bahrain Turf Series Announced as Sponsor of £60,000 Stayers Handicap on Weatherbys Super Sprint Day

Newbury Racecourse is delighted to welcome the Bahrain Turf Series as the new sponsor of the £60,000 stayers handicap on Saturday 17 July which forms part of Weatherbys Super Sprint Day and will be broadcast on ITV1.

The extended two-mile contest for three-year-olds and upwards was introduced to the card three years ago and was won in 2020 by recent Royal Ascot winner, Reshoun. This will be the fourth running of the race, which has also been won by Roger Charlton’s Withhold (2019) and the Willie Mullins-trained Stratum (2018).

The Bahrain Turf Series has recently been introduced in Bahrain and will run from December 2021 through to March 2022, with ten new races specifically targeting international horses rated 85-100. The Bahrain Turf Series will be interlinked and run alongside the best racing in Bahrain, including the prestigious King’s Cup, Crown Prince’s Cup and National Day Grade One.

The race series will have a total of £550,000 prize money fund. £50,000 is allocated per series race with a minimum of £30,000 to the winner. The turf series will also have a bonus point system attached depending on where horses finish. The points will be added and at the end of the series the owner of the horse with the most points in each pot will get £15,000 and the trainer of the horse with most points will get £10,000. This will mean an extra £50,000 in total prize money.

Harriet Collins, Marcomms and Sponsorship Director at Newbury Racecourse, commented “We are delighted to welcome The Bahrain Turf Series as a sponsor on Weatherbys Super Sprint Day. This is an exciting new race series which will be enjoyed internationally and are a great supporting partner for us on a day of high-quality racing when we often see international interest.

“This day is always hugely popular as our first summer Saturday of the year and we are looking forward to welcoming a maximum crowd of 4,000. For those who sadly we have been unable to accommodate, we hope they will enjoy all the action from home and come back and see us later this summer.”
