2023 Flat Season Recap

Now that the 23/24 Jump Season is over, we are reliving some of the best moments from last year’s Flat Season at Newbury!

#1 – Shaquille is victorious in the Listed BetVictor Carnarvon Stakes

Shaquille ran very strongly in the 2023 BetVictor Carnarvon Stakes (Listed) on Al Shaqab Lockinge Day, winning easily under a great ride from jockey James Doyle.

Shortly after his victory, Big Shaq (as he’s fondly known at home) went on to win the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot and the Group 1 July Cup Stakes at Newmarket.

The bay stallion retired to stud at the end of October 2023, and his first crop of foals will be set to make their debut in 2027.

#2 – Arrest and Frankie Dettori

Frankie Dettori and Arrest made all to win the long-running Group 3 BetVictor Geoffrey Freer Stakes. With this being Frankie’s last race at Newbury before he headed off to America, of course this had to be one of our top moments of 2023!

#3 – Not So Sleepy takes the Dubai Duty Free Autumn Cup

The 11-year-old chestnut gelding proved that age is just a number after Oisin Murphy piloted him to win the £70,000 Autumn Cup Race after having not won a race in two years.

Not So Sleepy is a special horse as he is one of the few who competes both on the flat and over jumps. His record has been patchy but over his ten year racing career he has won the Grade 1 Fighting Fifth Hurdle held at Newcastle on two occasions.
