Wrapping Up On The 2024/25 Jumps Season
Newbury Racecourse is reflecting on the end of another fantastic National Hunt season. From the opening fixture, the BetVictor Jumps Season Opener on November 7 through to the BetVictor Flat Finale last weekend, eleven fixtures have been hosted at the Berkshire track.Â
The season featured 75 races in which the track welcomed 606 individual runners. Prize money totalling £2,512,150 was won by connections.Â
The leading jockey for the season was 2023/24 Champion Jockey, Harry Cobden. Cobden claimed his first victory in the feature race of the National Hunt season at Newbury, the Coral Gold Cup, when steering home the Paul Nicholls trained Kandoo Kid at odds of 8/1.Â
Dan Skelton, on course for his first trainers’ championship, was the leading trainer of Newbury’s 2024/25 National Hunt season. Notable successes for Skelton came in the Coral Challow Hurdle with The New Lion. Ridden by brother Harry, the four and three-quarter length winner of Newbury’s sole Grade 1 went on to record victory in the Grade 1 Turners Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.  Further successes came in the Listed Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle with Listentoyourheart as well with Kadastral in the Goffs Hundred Grand Bumper. Â
Newbury Racecourse welcomed William Hill as the new sponsor of Super Saturday which saw Master Chewy provide the Twiston-Davies team with Grade 2 gory in the Wiliam Hill Game Spirit Chase at odds of 11/1. The 25th renewal of the Denman Chase was won by the Venetia Williams trained Djelo, ridden to victory by Charlie Deutsch. Europe’s richest handicap hurdle, The William Hill Hurdle, worth £155,000 was won by Joyeuse, providing jockey Nico de Boinville and trainer Nicky Henderson with back-to-back victories in the race. William Hill Super Saturday welcomed the biggest crowd since 2018, a 14% increase on 2024 attendance figures.
Our thanks go to all those who have made it another successful season which has seen attendance increase year-on-year by 18%, including a record 46% increase in attendance on Coral Challow Hurdle Day. We look forward to kickstarting the Flat season with the Dubai Duty Free Spring Trials Meeting on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 April.
