Remembering Datsalrightgino – Coral Gold Cup Winner

Remembering Datsalrightgino, our Coral Gold Cup winner for 2023 who sadly passed away on Saturday 27th January.

Datsalrightgino had one of the most emphatic wins we have seen in the race’s history, moving his way from last to first in such a brave and professional style. His jockey, Gavin Sheehan, gave him a peach of a ride, sitting quietly and moving up the ranks until the final straight where he began the challenge.

It is always great to have a local winner, so for Lambourn-based trainer Jamie Snowden to win such a prestigious race steeped in over 60 years of history it was an incredible feat.

A few members of the Newbury team were able to meet Gino a couple of weeks after his win. His character shone through and he was well aware of his star status. When asked what he’s like to ride at home, his usual exercise rider said

“he is great, very straight-foward and professional. You don’t really have to think when you’re on him unlike some of the others, he really knows his job. He definitely thinks he’s ‘the man’ though!”

Jamie Snowden, noted that he had come out of the race:

“really well, he’s bouncing. He’s certainly enjoying all the adulations that everybody is giving him, and he thinks he’s the king, which is great”.

The whole team at Newbury sends their sympathies and best wishes to Jamie Snowden and his team at Folly House, as well as Gavin Sheehan, his owners The GD Partnership, and all other connections of Gino.
