Newbury Racecourse 2024 Flat Season Moments

As the flat season draws to a close Newbury highlights the top racing moments of 2024!

As the 2024 Flat Season draws to a close we have had highlighted some fabulous racing moments throughout.

 

We firstly kick off with some moments from Dubai Duty Free Spring Trials Weekend.

 

Folgaria

Trained by Marco Botti, Folgaria provided the yard with an emotional success in the Group 3 Dubai Duty Free Stakes (Registered as The Fred Darling Stakes). Having recorded five consecutive victories in Italy in 2023 when trained by Botti’s brother, the three-year-old filly was having her first start for the Newmarket based trainer. The daughter of Due Diligence was sent off at odds of 5/1 under Hollie Doyle. She kept on in the final furlong to beat the John and Thady Gosden trained Regal Jubilee into second by a neck, and subsequent QIPCO 1,000 Guineas winner Elmalka back in third.

Hamish

Hamish kicked off his season in style when landing the Group 3 Dubai Duty Free Finest Surprise Stakes (Registered as The John Porter Stakes) following an unbeaten 2023 season. Sent off 5/2 favourite under Tom Marquand, the William Haggas trained eight-year-old came from last to first to just beat Al Qareem by a neck.

Esquire

Sent off at odds of 16/1, the David O’Meara trained Esquire put in a career best performance to provide a shock result in the 2024 renewal of the Group 3 Watership Down Stud Too Darn Hot Greenham Stakes. Ridden by Danny Tudhope, the son of Harry Angel went clear to finish one and a quarter lengths ahead of the Jane Chapple-Hyam trained El Bodon and Ralph Beckett trained Zoum Zoum.

Al Shaqab Lockinge Day

 

Elite Status

Following a break of 231 days, Elite Status made his seasonal reappearance in the Listed Highclere Castle Gin Carnarvon Stakes. The six furlong contest saw 2023 Weatherbys Super Sprint winner, Relief Rally, return to the Berkshire track and be sent off 3/1 favourite. He could only manage a second place finish with the Karl Burke trained Elite Status going clear one furlong out to win by two and three quarter lengths and land an impressive victory under Clifford Lee. Owned by Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, the three-year-old returned to the track in July and landed back to back victories when winning the Group 3 Fidelity Energy Hackwood Stakes.

Middle Earth

Unraced as a two-year-old, the Qatar Racing owned son of Roaring Lion won three of his six career starts as a three-year-old. He returned after a break of 225 days to be sent off a 100/30 chance in the Group 3 Sky Sports Racing Aston Park Stakes under jockey Oisin Murphy when trained by John and Thady Gosden. Evens favourite on the day, Desert Hero, managed only a fifth place finish but it was King Of Conquest for Godolphin who put up a strong challenge, failing by just a nose.

Audience

A Group 3 winner as a three-year-old, Audience made his seasonal reappearance in what was his first start in Group 1 company in the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes. Trained by John and Thady Gosden for Cheveley Park Stud, he was their second string in the race with six time Group 1 Inspiral also contesting Newbury’s Group 1 feature race. Ridden by Rab Havlin, Audience started at odds of 22/1, the son of Iffraaj made all and went clear two furlongs out. Despite the best efforts of those in behind, he could not be caught and finished one and three quarter lengths ahead of subsequent Queen Anne Stakes winner Charyn.

Weatherbys Super Sprint

 

Phantom Flight

Having not been seen on a racecourse since 12th August 2023, Phantom Flight had his first start for trainer George Scott at Newbury following a break of 343 days. The son of Siyouni was sent off at odds of 16/1 under jockey Callum Shepherd in the 1m2f Get Best Odds Guaranteed At BetVictor Steventon Stakes (Listed Race).  Phantom Flight raced in second before taking the lead one furlong out, going on to land victory for owners Victorious Racing, one length ahead of the William Haggas trained Al Aasy.

Elite Status 

Elite Status made his seasonal reappearance when winning the Listed Highclere Castle Gin Carnarvon Stakes. Owned by Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, the three-year-old trained by Karl Burke returned to Newbury after 63 days and landed back to back victories when winning the Group 3 Fidelity Energy Hackwood Stakes. Sent off 5/2 favourite under Clifford Lee, he led inside the final furlong to just hold off the William Haggas trained Lake Forest. Third placed that day was subsequent Group 1 QIPCO British Champions Sprint Stakes winner Kind Of Blue.

Caburn 

Caburn provided young Newmarket based trainer Jack Jones with the biggest winner of his career when landing the £250,000 Weatherbys Super Sprint. Purchased for 24,000 gns from Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 3, the son of Twilight Son had only one previous career start when winning a Restricted Novice Stakes at Salisbury. He was sent off at odds of 12/1 under Dylan Hogan when dropping back to five furlongs at Newbury. Despite being hampered in running, Caburn ran on well to just beat the Archie Watson trained Vingegaard by a neck.

Yo Mo Be There

Trained by Richard Spencer for owner Phil Cunningham, Yah Mo Be There became the first black-type winner for Shadwell’s Sussex Stakes winner Mohaather when winning the Listed Rose Bowl Stakes at Newbury. Having been beaten a short head on debut in a Class 2 Novice Stakes at York, he was disappointing in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at the Royal meeting. He bounced back from his below par performance at Ascot to be ridden to victory by Jamie Spencer when sent off at odds of 9/2, keeping on well to beat the Karl Burke trained Jungle Drums by one and a quarter lengths.

BetVictor Hungerford Day

 

Al Aasy 

The seven-year-old, trained by William Haggas for Shadwell Estate Company Ltd, started his season at Newbury when finishing second in the Listed Steventon Stakes. The son of Sea The Stars went on to secure Group 3 victory at Goodwood before returning to Newbury to start evens favourite under Jim Crowley in the Group 3 BetVictor Geoffrey Freer Stakes. He recorded an easy victory when finishing two lengths clear of the Karl Burke trained Al Qareem in second.

Englemere 

Englemere provided owner George Waud with his first ever black type winner when the daughter of Goken was ridden to victory in the Listed St Hugh’s Stakes by Billy Loughnane. Trained by George Boughey, the two-year-old filly had won twice previously before stepping into Group company in the Queen Mary Stakes. Following her Ascot run she finished second in a Sandown nursey before making the transition back to stakes company a winning one at Newbury. Despite a slow start at Newbury, the 8/1 chance made smooth headway from over two furlongs out to hold on by a neck from the Karl Burke trained Kaadi in the five furlong contest.

Tiber Flow 

Tiber Flow provided trainer William Haggas with a double on BetVictor Hungerford Day when landing the feature race of the day, the Group 2 BetVictor Hungerford Stakes. The five-year-old son of Caravaggio had not run at Newbury since a sixth place finish in the Hungerford Stakes two years previously. Ridden by Tom Marquand for owner breeders Jon and Julia Aisbitt, the 4/1 shot just held on by a nose to the rallying Richard Hannon trained Witch Hunter in the seven furlong contest.

Dubai Duty Free International Weekend

 

Witness Stand 

A handicap winner at the Qatar Goodwood Festival, Witness Stand was an emphatic winner of the Listed Dubai Duty Free Cup Stakes under jockey Kieran Shoemark for owners The Bronte Collection. A field of eight went to post in the seven furlong contest which saw 2/1 favourite, Nostrum, weaken very quickly. Witness Stand, a 7/1 chance, relished the soft conditions, going clear from the halfway stage to finish three lengths clear of the Ed Walker trained English Oak.

No Half Measures 

No Half Measures provided Lambourn based trainer Richard Hughes with a first Group victory in the Dubai International Airport World Trophy Stakes over five furlongs in heavy ground. Ridden by Ryan Moore, the three-year-old daughter of Cable Bay had finished sixth in the Group 3 Qatar Prix du Petit Couvert on the previous Sunday. Sent off at odds of 6/1, she ran on well to beat the 2023 Weatherbys Super Sprint winner, Relief Rally, into second by one and a quarter lengths. No Half Measuers has been a success story for owner Richard Gallagher, going from a handicap rating of 73 in April to landing the Newbury Group 3 contest and achieving a rating of 108.

Powerful Glory 

With the ground officially heavy, the 2024 renewal of the Group 2 Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes over six furlongs was attritional for the two-year-olds. Following a host of non-runners, the Richard Fahey trained Powerful Glory toughed it out to win his first start in Group company. Having been a runaway five-and-a-half-length winner on debut at Pontefract, the son of Cotai Glory was sent off at odds of 5/2 under jockey Oisin Orr for owner Sheikh Rashid Dalmook Al Maktoum at Newbury. He kept on well in the final furlong to hold off a challenge by the 28/1 John Ryan trained La Bellota to win by a neck.
