Beyond The Finish Line: Native River
A horse synonymous with Newbury Racecourse, Native River enjoyed a remarkable record here throughout his career. Unbeaten in all five of his starts over fences at Newbury, he delivered some of the most memorable performances in recent years, including three dominant wins in the Grade 2 William Hill Denman Chase – a feat that remains unmatched – and victory in the 2016 Hennessy Gold Cup (now Coral Gold Cup).
Trained by Colin Tizzard throughout his career, the hugely popular chestnut recorded 14 victories from 32 starts, amassing over £1.1 million in prize money. His consistency and staying power made him one of the most admired chasers of his generation. His greatest triumph came in the 2018 Cheltenham Gold Cup – the final Grade 1 success of his career.
Native River’s final race came in December 2021 in the Welsh Grand National, where Brendan Powell – recognising that he was not showing his usual spark – pulled him up. Following the run, Colin Tizzard confirmed that the time had come for the champion to retire.

Since retiring, Native River has embraced an active and varied second career, with his versatility and nature shining through. He has appeared at a School Prom, attended the 30th Anniversary of the Rocking Horse Nursery here at Newbury Racecourse, visited Boodles on Bond Street, and starred in numerous RoR Parades. In 2014, he added another accolade to his name when he was crowned Tatersalls RoR Amateur Show Series Final Champion at Hickstead.

Native River will make a popular return to Newbury Racecourse on Saturday 7th February for the William Hill Super Saturday RoR Parade, joined by fellow stars Smad Place, Coneygree, Barbers Shop, Dashel Drasher, and Lord du Mesnil.
