Beyond The Finish Line: Coneygree
Coneygree’s career, which spanned from 2011 to 2019, was a fairytale story of success. Across just 18 starts, he recorded nine victories – including five consecutive wins during his exceptional 2014/2015 campaign.
11 years ago, on his third start over fences, Coneygree stormed to victory in the 2015 William Hill Denman Chase. His dominant performance in what was his first race in open company confirmed Mark Bradstock’s bold intention to aim him at the Cheltenham Gold Cup that same season.
Just weeks later, under Nico de Boinville, Coneygree made history by becoming the first novice in 41 years to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup. It was that confident decision from Bradstock that delivered one of the most memorable Festival moments.
Bred and trained by the late Mark Bradstock, Coneygree’s story began with the £3,000 purchase of his dam – Plaid Maid – who also produced Carruthers, winner of the 2011 Hennessy Gold Cup (now Coral Gold Cup). It was a true racing fairy tale.
Coneygree’s final victory came the following season, when he powered home by an incredible 25 lengths in a Listed race at Sandown. He continued to run a handful more times before being pulled up in his final start at Ascot during the 2018/2019 season.
Today, Coneygree enjoys retirement at the Bradstock family yard in Letcombe Bassett, where he “knows he is the king”, as described by Sara Bradstock. He regularly competes in RoR classes, having twice qualified for the Tattersalls RoR Show Series Final at Hickstead. He has even tried his hand at team chasing with Sara’s son, Alfie.
Coneygree will return to Newbury Racecourse on Saturday 7th February for the William Hill Super Saturday RoR Parade, joining fellow stars Smad Place, Native River, Barbers Shop, Dashel Drasher, and Lord du Mesnil.
