Newbury Racecourse goes ‘Retro at the Races’

Newbury Racecourse will be celebrating the heyday of British racing on Saturday 20 July with ‘Retro at the Races’, a raceday dedicated to all that was great about the 1960s and 1970s.

‘Retro at the Races’ will invite you to channel your inner Mick or Twiggy, don your 60s A-line dress and swing coat or 70s bell bottoms and platforms and come along for a day devoted to racing, music and a celebration of an iconic era in recent British history.

In the 1970s the racecourse played host to some of the all time racing greats including Mill Reef and Brigadier Gerard whilst celebrities including Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were among the racing crowds.

The big race of the day will be the Weatherbys Super Sprint, a fast and furious five furlong dash. Stylish racegoers will be rewarded for their efforts with style competitions, judged by celebrity stylists for their retro appeal. The racecourse will also feature the very best in music, memorabilia and retro entertainment throughout the day. Stephen Higgins, Managing Director – racing and events, commented:

“Retro at the Races will see racing highlights that include the headline Weatherbys Super Sprint, alongside plenty of retro entertainment. We’re inviting racegoers to get into the spirit of the day, dress up in their finest 60’s and 70’s styles to create and be part of a really great atmosphere.”

*This fixture will not feature a Party in the Paddock performance.
